Ground Water Recharge

Project

About

The Ground Water Recharge Project of EDCFs is first of its kind project using percolation technology to recharge the ground water from rooftop rainwater harvesting.

The technology is developed over time by Mr. P. A. Padmanabhan, a central government employee who worked on various community led initiatives in Andaman & Nicobar islands after his retirement in the year 2008 focused on community based water literacy and conservation programmes in and around his native village in Trivandrum.

The Technology

He indigenously developed the pressure injection model of ground water recharging, which became a success after it helped many villages recover from water shortage problems during peak summers consistently for many years since its deployment. The equally important second project was focused on harnessing the rain water to invigorate the dry wells in the area. One such initiative leads to the local government hospital saving lakhs of rupees annually in buying water through tankers.

Project locations

The projects are implemented in two locations in Trivandrum district of Kerala:

  1. - Naniyode Panchayat in Vamanapuram Block
  2. - Peringamala Panchayat in Vamanapuram Block

Pre and Post Implementation Scenario

Before 2013 there was water scarcity in the above said panchayats especially in summer, people used to bring water from outside for their daily usages, since the project implemented, gradually the water level increased (in an area of 500-600 Meters around the project) and now-a-days there is abundance of water for their daily usage.

Key Highlights

The projects use less space, simple implementation and secure installation methods, thus it is very easy to replicate and can be implemented easily.

  • - Easy to implement
  • - Ground Water Zone is not Contaminated as it uses natural filter.
  • - Less Space Required
  • - Long Life-span (30-40 Years)
  • - No Storage Tanks Required
  • - Negligible Maintenance
